Welcome to the Gianforte School of Computing

In August 2016, the Computer Science Department became the Gianforte School of Computing.  A School of Computing captures both the pervasive breadth, as well as the technical depth, of computer science in today's world.  Greg and Susan Gianforte are long-time supporters of our organization and provided this generous naming gift.  The gift accelerates our ability to provide high caliber learning experiences to any Montana State University student who wishes to study computer science or data science.  Learn what students enjoy about our organization by watching these videos.

And it is an exciting time to study computing.  During the past decades, search engines, smart phones and social media have transformed our world.  In the coming years, large language models (e.g. ChatGPT), artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, the harnessing of big data and the prevalence of robots will transform our world again.  If you enjoy creative problem solving, working with people and using computers to help invent the future, then you should consider pursuing a computing-related degree!

Because software pervades our world, computer and data scientists enjoy impactful, meaningful careers that include helping people lead healthier and more independent lives, taking better care of our environment, improving urban infrastructure and developing games.  On top of this, a high market demand results in flexible, well-paid careers.

Vision Statement

The Gianforte School of Computing at Montana State University will be a leader in computing innovation through excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, active research programs, and impactful engagement.  To accomplish this, we will leverage the interdisciplinary nature of computing and provide a collegial environment that enables all faculty, staff, and students to flourish.
